The Triquetra is an ancient European symbol denoting triplicity. In Celtic cosmology it represents the 3 worldly domains – Land, Sea and Sky.
For Christians, it has been a symbol of the Holy Trinity, predating even the crucifix. In Wiccan and Pagan traditions it represents the triple aspect of the Goddess – Maid, Mother and Crone.
It is often associated with the triplicity of Mind, Body and Spirit and in Ireland is commonly given to loved ones to represent the 3 promises of a relationship – to love, honour and protect.
When combined with an interweaving circle, it represents unity of these 3 aspects. The Triquetra is also a powerful protection symbol.
